Located between Nairobi and Mombasa, Tsavo National Park is Kenya's largest wildlife park. Tsavo is actually divided into two parks, separated by the main Nairobi-Mombasa road and railway. Tsavo East is generally flat with undulating plains, while Tsavo West is a more mountainous and wooded landscape with volcanic cones and lava flows. Both sides are home to a vast array of wildlife, including the Big Five.
On a holiday in Tsavo National Park, you're likely to see large herds of elephants making their way across the open plains and grasslands. Visit the park's watering holes and you may spot hippos, crocs and other wildlife seeking water. Tsavo East is known for its distinctive 'red elephants', which are tinged a reddish-brown colour due to dustbathing in the area's red volcanic soil.
