This string of idyllic islands in the centre of The Bahamas is famed for its secluded beaches, serene turquoise waters and protected coral reefs that offer spectacular diving and snorkelling. Easily reached via a short flight or boat ride from the capital city of Nassau, The Exumas are a haven for those seeking an idyllic tropical retreat and exciting water-based activities.
In addition to relaxing on exquisite footprint-free beaches, visitors can explore Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, a 176-square-mile protected marine reserve. Here you can snorkel or scuba dive amongst vibrant reefs and feed endangered Bahamian iguanas. Divers can also explore the underwater cave system known as Thunderball Grotto; reached by a hidden entrance, these impressive caves have featured in several movies including two James Bond films.
Other marine activities in The Exumas include swimming with docile nurse sharks at Compass Bay and petting friendly stingrays near Stocking Island. But perhaps the most famous animal encounter on offer is meeting The Bahamas’ famous swimming pigs. Paddling with these playful pigs on the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay should be on everyone’s Bahamas holiday bucket list.
